In what could be a very important discovery for the future of education, scientists are learning that the mere position of a desk could determine how well a child learns. According to their study, children with standing desks are generally more attentive than their seated counterparts. Not only do they pay more attention to the teacher, but they also show signs of improved cognitive functioning. Students who sit during classroom instruction are more prone to disruptive behavior and are therefore less focused on the teacher. These findings support previous evidence which shows that humans in general are more mentally engaged and think more creatively while standing, not to mention the benefits of reducing the risks of obesity and heart disease in the process.
